Eyelid Surgery: A Minor Procedure That Delivers Major Results

Eyelid Surgery: A Minor Procedure That Delivers Major Results

If drooping eyelids make your eyes look tired — or interfere with your vision — eyelid surgery could be the solution you’re looking for to restore a more energized, youthful appearance, along with clear, unobstructed vision.

Not only can eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) offer dramatic improvements, but the procedure is also surprisingly straightforward, with little downtime or disruption to your daily life.

Rodrigo Belalcazar, MD, PLLC, has extensive experience in eyelid surgery techniques, helping our patients at Advanced Eye Center in Hialeah, Florida, improve their appearance and vision. Here, learn more about eyelid surgery and how it can help you achieve your personal goals.

Eyelid surgery: The basics

Blepharoplasty can be used to treat both upper and lower eyelids, separately or in a single procedure.

Upper lid surgery

Upper lid blepharoplasty focuses on removing excess skin (and sometimes fat) that causes heaviness or sagging. During the procedure, Dr. Belalacazar makes a small incision in your eyelid’s natural crease, so any scars remain well hidden.

Once the extra tissue is removed, he repositions the underlying muscle when needed and closes the incision with tiny sutures.

Lower lid surgery

Lower eyelid surgery helps address under-eye puffiness, loose skin, and lid drooping that appears to drag your eye downward.

Depending on your specific needs, Dr. Belalacazar makes the incision just below your eyelashes or inside your lower lid, removing excess skin and fat before closing the incision with very fine sutures.

Both procedures are performed on an outpatient basis and are associated with minimal downtime and a quick and comfortable recovery.

Before heading home after your procedure, we provide you with complete care instructions to speed healing and reduce discomfort. Follow-up visits ensure your recovery remains on track while you heal.

Major benefits

Even though eyelid surgery might be considered a minor procedure, it definitely yields major benefits.

Correcting ptosis

Ptosis is the medical term for droopy upper eyelids, and while a minor amount of ptosis typically doesn’t cause problems, more advanced ptosis can impact your vision. In addition to the natural sagging of your eyelid skin, ptosis can be affected by weakening in the muscles that help lift your upper eyelids.

Eyelid surgery corrects ptosis by removing excess tissue and strengthening or repositioning the muscles, supporting normal lid function. In these cases, blepharoplasty restores not only appearance but also function, improving vision and overall eye performance.

Cosmetic advantages

Many people think of eyelid surgery in terms of its cosmetic benefits — specifically, its ability to help you look more awake, energized, and, of course, more youthful.

Because your eyes are such a central feature, excess skin, puffiness, or bags can make you look older or more tired than you feel. By removing sagging tissue and smoothing the contours of your upper and lower lids, eyelid surgery offers a dramatic improvement in your overall appearance.

Cosmetic procedures can also enhance the definition of your upper lid crease, improve symmetry between your eyes, and reduce fine wrinkles that tend to become more common and deeper as we age.

Dr. Belalcazar specializes in techniques that deliver natural-looking results, so you look refreshed but never stiff or overdone.

There’s no denying blepharoplasty can be a game-changer, whether you want to rejuvenate a tired appearance or improve vision obstructed by droopy lids.

Dr. Belalcazar also offers Plexr® treatment, a nonsurgical alternative to blepharoplasty that provides many of the same results without incisions or sutures. During your initial consultation, he determines which option is better for your goals.
