LASIK Surgery

What is LASIK surgery?

LASIK eye surgery is a common laser refractive procedure that can correct vision problems. It’s an alternative to wearing contact lenses or eyeglasses. This type of surgery uses a laser to change the shape of your cornea and correct vision problems caused by nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

Dr. Belalcazar uses the latest advances in technology during LASIK surgery to make the experience painless and enhance your recovery.

Is LASIK surgery right for me?

To find out if you’re a candidate for LASIK surgery, Dr. Belalcazar and his team review your medical history, discuss your symptoms, conduct a dilated eye examination, and have you complete various vision tests.

He discusses your desired outcome, talks about the risks and benefits associated with LASIK surgery, and lets you know what to expect during the procedure.

If your corneas are too thin for LASIK surgery, you might be a good candidate for photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) or epi-LASIK surgery, which are types of laser procedures for vision correction.

Dr. Belalcazar might combine LASIK with corneal cross-linking to strengthen your cornea and improve your outcome. He uses wavefront-guided technology to evaluate your eyes, create a detailed map of them, and personalize your procedure.

How should I prepare for my surgery?

To get ready for LASIK surgery with Dr. Belalcazar, make arrangements for someone to drive you home after the procedure. Stop wearing contact lenses a few weeks before your scheduled surgery, and don’t wear eye makeup, lotions, creams, or perfumes on the day of the procedure.

What happens during LASIK surgery?

When you arrive at Dr. Belalcazar’s office for LASIK surgery, your provider numbs your eyes using eye drops. They offer you a sedative to help you relax while you lie on your back in a comfortable reclining chair.

Dr. Belalcazar places a suction ring on your eye before creating a corneal flap. Your vision might dim a little, and you may feel slight pressure.

While you stare at a special light, Dr. Belalcazar uses a programmed laser to reshape parts of your cornea. He lays the eye flap back into place, which heals without stitches. The procedure often lasts about 30 minutes or less.

What should I expect after the procedure?

Follow Dr. Belalcazar’s post-surgery instructions after LASIK surgery. Use eye drops as directed, get plenty of rest, and wear an eye shield at night until your eyes heal. Avoid wearing cosmetics or participating in strenuous physical activity until Dr. Belalcazar gives you the okay.

Attend all follow-up appointments with Dr. Belalcazar, and expect your vision to become clearer after several weeks or months.

Don’t live with blurry vision or wear glasses or contacts when you don’t have to. Schedule an appointment with Advanced Eye Center, by phone or book online today to determine if LASIK surgery is right for you.
